Southern Gig Driver Council
Southern Gig Drivers is a developing industrial council of the Southern Workers Assembly (SWA), formed in Fall 2024 to unite and empower rideshare and gig workers across the South through grassroots, worker-led organizing.
We are committed to rank-and-file democratic social movement unionism—a vision of unionism that goes beyond just contracts and wages, and fights for real worker democracy, social justice, and independent worker-led power in the face of corporate exploitation.
As part of the Southern Workers Assembly, we stand on core principles that guide our work:
- Rank-and-file democracy—decisions made by and accountable to workers.
- Organizing the unorganized—building real worker power, even where traditional unions don’t exist.
- Fighting all forms of discrimination—ensuring unity across race, nationality, gender, and immigration status.
- National & international labor solidarity—learning from and supporting workers’ struggles everywhere.
- Building a Southern labor congress—creating a powerful, worker-run infrastructure across industries.
- Fighting for independent political action—workers must have their own voice, beyond corporate parties.
Our core demands include:
- Repealing anti-worker laws like Taft-Hartley and Right-to-Work that weaken worker power.
- Winning collective bargaining rights for ALL workers, not just those already unionized.
- Transforming labor power in the South—where corporations and politicians have long relied on weak labor laws to suppress worker organizing.
