The U.S. and global economy does not move without the labor of Southern workers. We have tremendous power, not only to fight for control in our workplaces, but to lead movements for broader social change, as Southern workers have time and again throughout history. 

Now, we face an unprecedented period. We are experiencing a declining quality of life as the price of basic necessities soar, even as the corporations we work for earn record profits, working longer hours, taking on extra jobs, but still not having much to show for it. The Trump administration and the reactionary clique of billionaires they represent and have put in charge are unleashing attacks on migrants and many other sections of the working class, attempting to take a hammer to every measure of social progress won through struggle over the last century.

How do we harness our power into a driving force to fight back against the billionaire class’s agenda, build working class organization, and take on the urgent challenge to organize the South and advance a progressive vision for society?

The 2025 Southern Worker Action Summit will bring together rank and file workers from sectors and workplaces across the South to address these questions. We’ll discuss, debate, exchange, train, and strategize about how to build a militant, independent, fighting workers movement in the U.S. South. 

This gathering aims to advance a higher level of unity and consciousness that leads to coordinated collective action and expanded efforts to build committees at unorganized workplaces, workers assemblies, and other forms of organization to build power across industries in the South.  Social, economic, and political power can only be realized through targeted organizing of Black, Brown, and all workers in the South.

The Southern economic model is rooted in racism, and has resulted in workers here earning the lowest wages, having the lowest levels of unionization, and the lowest measures of quality of life across the board, impacting Black and Brown communities hardest.

The states of the South, dominated by some of the most reactionary politicians, are the epicenter of legislation targeting migrant workers and trans youth, severely limiting the right to access abortion, attacking basic voting rights, banning public sector collective bargaining, privatizing education and restricting what can be taught in classrooms, and more. As public services are cut, trillions are spent on war. 

It doesn’t have to be this way. The key question to addressing these and other challenges faced by the working class is power and the type of organization we can build to exercise it to turn the tide. 

Throughout history, workers in the South have often faced some of the most repressive and challenging conditions. Despite this, Southern workers have led some of the most militant struggles for social progress, harnessing the power of broad alliances between workers and the community to develop creative and potent methods to fight back. It’s this spirit and long history that we must draw on and channel to confront the crises the working class faces today.

It will take determination and a higher level of solidarity, uniting workers across lines of race, gender, nationality, immigration status, sexual orientation, ability, and every other social division the bosses exploit to keep us divided and weak. 

Unorganized workers, organizations focused on organizing the unorganized, and rank and file union members who see the necessity of building power from the shop floor up should plan to join us in Spartanburg, SC, on June 13 – 15 for this gathering. There’s no time to waste.

La economía de los Estados Unidos y de todo el mundo no avanza sin el esfuerzo de los trabajadores del Sur. Tenemos un enorme poder, no solo para luchar por el control en nuestros lugares de trabajo, sino también para liderar movimientos en busca de un mayor cambio social, tal como lo hemos hecho una y otra vez a lo largo de nuestra historia. 

En este momento, enfrentamos un período que no tiene precedentes. Sufrimos la degradación de nuestra calidad de vida mientras los precios de los artículos de necesidad básica se disparan sin freno. A pesar de que las corporaciones para las que trabajamos baten récords de ganancias, seguimos sumando horas de trabajo y empleos extra como ayuda, pero sin ver ningún resultado. El gobierno de Trump y la camarilla de multimillonarios reaccionarios a los que representa y ha puesto en el poder han lanzado un sinfín de ataques contra los inmigrantes y muchos otros sectores de la clase trabajadora. Intentan destruir todas las medidas de progreso social logradas gracias a nuestra lucha en el siglo pasado.

¿Cómo podemos utilizar nuestro poder para tomar impulso y contraatacar la agenda de los multimillonarios, construir organización en la clase trabajadora y asumir el urgente desafío de organizar el Sur y generar una visión progresista para la sociedad?

La Cumbre de Acción de los Trabajadores del Sur (Southern Worker Action Summit) de 2025 convocará a trabajadores de base de diferentes sectores y lugares de trabajo del Sur para responder estas preguntas. La propuesta es conversar, debatir, intercambiar, capacitarnos y elaborar estrategias para definir cómo podemos construir un movimiento de trabajadores combativo e independiente para luchar en el Sur de los Estados Unidos. 

El objetivo de este encuentro es avanzar a un nivel más alto de unidad y concientización, para lograr una acción colectiva organizada y multiplicar los esfuerzos que permitan crear comités en lugares de trabajo aún no organizados, asambleas de trabajadores y otras formas de organización con el fin de generar un poder real en todos los sectores de la industria sureña.  La única forma de construir un verdadero poder social, económico y político es el trabajo organizado de las comunidades negras y de color y de todos los trabajadores del Sur.

El modelo económico que prevalece en el Sur está arraigado en el racismo y, en consecuencia, los trabajadores tienen los salarios más bajos, los menores niveles de sindicalización y las peores condiciones de vida de todo el país, lo que afecta con más fuerza a las comunidades de personas negras y de color.

Los estados del Sur, dominados por algunos de los políticos más reaccionarios de los Estados Unidos, son el epicentro de la legislación que ataca a los trabajadores inmigrantes y la juventud trans, que limita gravemente el acceso a servicios de aborto, que ataca los derechos electorales básicos, que prohíbe la negociación colectiva en el sector público, que privatiza la educación y restringe los contenidos que pueden enseñarse, y mucho más. Recortan los servicios públicos, pero gastan billones de dólares en la guerra. 

Esto no tiene por qué continuar. La clave para superar estos y otros desafíos que enfrenta la clase trabajadora reside en el poder y en el tipo de organización que podemos construir para ejercer ese poder y cambiar el curso de la historia. 

A lo largo de la historia, a los trabajadores del Sur muchas veces les tocó enfrentar algunas de las condiciones más represivas y hostiles que puedan imaginarse. A pesar de esto, los trabajadores sureños han liderado algunas de las batallas más combativas en pos del progreso social y han aprovechado el poder de las alianzas extendidas entre los trabajadores y la comunidad para desarrollar métodos creativos y potentes que les permitan defenderse y contraatacar. Este espíritu y esta larga historia de lucha deben ser nuestra inspiración y nuestro apoyo para afrontar las crisis que atentan contra la clase trabajadora en la actualidad.

Necesitaremos una absoluta determinación y un mayor nivel de solidaridad para unir a los trabajadores más allá de la raza, el género, la nacionalidad, la situación migratoria, la orientación sexual, el nivel de capacidad y cualquier otra división social que los jefes quieran usar para romper nuestra unión y debilitarnos. 

Los trabajadores sin pertenencia a una organización, las organizaciones que buscan incluir nuevos miembros, la membresía de base de los sindicatos que ven la necesidad de construir poder en la fábrica de abajo hacia arriba: todos están invitados a participar en este encuentro que se realizará en Spartanburg, Carolina del Sur, del 13 al 15 de junio. No hay tiempo que perder.

Summit Programming

All programming will take place at 1881 Events in Spartanburg, SC. Hotel blocks are available in adjacent and nearby hotels. A link to view and book hotel reservations is available on the registration form, will be emailed to you upon completing registration, and is accessible here.

Travel & Lodging Support

If you need lodging support, an organizer will be in touch with you to coordinate on that in the upcoming weeks.
